There are no less than 23 temples on the Besakih site, including the most important and one of the most renowned on the island: Pura Penataran Agung. The complex, perched at an altitude of 1,000 meters on the slopes of the Agung volcano, is the subject of frequent ceremonies where thousands of devotees from the four corners of the island flock, loaded with the largest offerings. However, beware of the harassment of guides and other onlookers, arm yourself with a little humour and expect to be asked for help often. Going there early in the morning or late in the afternoon guarantees fewer solicitations. Be careful not to go down to the village, but to the temple.
