A small town, or rather a large, dapper, flowery village. King Udayana died here in 1011 and was succeeded by his 2 sons, Airlanggha and Anak Wungsu. While King Airlanggha ruled Java, his brother was content with Bali, perhaps under his brother's orders from 1049 to 1077. That's why the 9 royal tombs on the banks of the Pakerisan have so many Javanese features, although there are also some Indian influences. Gunung Kawi ("poetic mountain"), located not far from the royal tombs and dated 1080, is a monastery whose various niches may contain the ashes of Anak Wungsu.
