Negara is the capital of Jembrana province, and is renowned throughout the archipelago for its traditional buffalo races. It's also a peaceful town, with a very wide avenue crossed by horse-drawn carts. This pretty town is particularly flowery. Muslims from Java and Malaysia settled here centuries ago, giving the town a very special atmosphere. Some of the old houses are still standing and bear witness to the " bugis " architectural style. These are long wooden family houses on stilts. The town of Negara was once home to one of the largest ports in West Balinese, at Perancak, on an estuary, through which sailors from all over Western Asia passed.
