This small town owes its name to the sugar refinery, Ingenio de azúcar, which was built after the Conquest to grind cane from the surrounding plantations and manufacture sugar. Nowadays tomatoes are mainly grown here, but the village is best known for its handicrafts. First of all the embroideries, made and sold in different workshops of the municipality, traditional embroideries, but also integrated into the current fashion, with its fashion shows. And also ceramics and ornaments of "pintaderas", painted aboriginal symbols. Finally, an artisanal bread, pan de puño, which is kneaded with the fist, famous all over the island, is made there.
