It produces good wines, bananas, cereals, exotic flowers and carnations. We will also take the opportunity to visit the cave of Bencomo, the last mencey, Guanche king, defeated in 1496 by Alonso Fernández de Lugo, which overlooks the valley of La Orotava. La Victoria, the next town, owes its name to the victory that ended the Spaniards' difficult conquest of Tenerife. De Lugo had the church dedicated to Our Lady of Victories built there. On the other hand, the next village, called La Matanza, "the massacre", 3 kilometres further east, recalls the bloody defeat suffered by the Spaniards against the Guanches two years earlier.
