It is the green heart of La Gomera and the last virgin forest in Europe. With an area of 3,984 ha, 10% of the island, this laurel forest, laurisilva, plunges hikers into a fairy-tale atmosphere, as humidity and fog give the trees strange postures. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, it offers a steep relief, crisscrossed with ravines, the barrancos, most of which are covered with forests that contrast with the aridity prevailing on the island. Rising between 800 and 1,487 m, these forests, nicknamed monteverde, preserve part of the flora of the forests that, millions of years ago, populated the Mediterranean area.
