The harmonious cohabitation of archaeological sites, monuments from the ancient world, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is remarkable in Zadar. The Roman Forum, churches and monasteries, palaces, squares and museums, including the Museum of Ancient Glass, the superb permanent exhibition of sacred art, the main street Kalelarga... these are just some of the city's highlights. The Sea Organ and the Salute to the Sun, contemporary architectural works designed by Nikola Bašić on the waterfront, attract many people, especially at sunset, which already enchanted Alfred Hitchcock during his stay in Zadar in 1964.All of Croatia's ancient walled cities open with monumental gates. In Zadar, the gate known as the Terre ferme gate, on the south side, looks out over the sea. This imposing triumphal arch, built in 1543, replaced the wooden bridge that linked this main entrance to a watchtower. The relief of Chrysogone cavalier, Zadar's patron saint, still stands here. Strolling through the maze of pedestrian streets, squares and small squares, it's immediately clear that there's a lot to do in this historic city! One day won't be enough.
