200 million years ago, sedimentary rocks accumulated at the bottom of the sea rose up. This gave rise to the Dinaric Alps. Abundant rainfall created caves and natural wells; the limestone, shaped by the water, sculpted stalactites and stalagmites. Water and forestry engineer Ante Premužić was the first to explore these peaks, at an average altitude of 1,500 m. In 1930, work began on the first facilities. At the highest point, Mount Zavižan (1,676 m), Croatia's highest meteorological station was built. The national park was established in 1999.
