The island's capital, the small port of Sali comes alive with the passage of ferries. In the Middle Ages, salt works were in operation, hence its name, first mentioned in an official document in 1105. Since the fish cannery closed, the port has become less active, fishermen have left the island to work on cargo ships. Today, tourism provides the first economic windfall.
