The beautifully restored Governor's Palace features modern, contemporary and multimedia art collections and temporary exhibitions.
At the time of Venice's domination of the city, Zadar was administered by a rector (governor) and a fleet captain. The Serenissima had provided housing for these senior officials. In this palace in particular, a mixture of eclectic styles, which was badly damaged during the Second World War and the last war of independence. With the help of European grants, in February 2017, the conservation department was able to reopen to the public a brand new museum, completely refurbished inside, but respecting the historic façade. The Rector's Palace now benefits from the latest safety standards and a futuristic museum vision, with the wandering and communication of the rooms facilitated and a large time slot in summer. This reconstruction and enhancement plan has great ambitions for the future of the historic city. In addition to the complete restoration of the architectural complex, the building is designed to become an international cultural centre, which will strengthen the tourist offer based on heritage resources and contemporary creation.
For the visit, on the ground floor, a large area is devoted to modern and contemporary art, temporary exhibitions, multimedia rooms, documentation, conferences in the auditorium. The first floor houses the permanent collections. A series of six apartments showcases the national furniture of past centuries.
