In the heart of a dense forest, between the plains and the mountains, the sixteen Plitvice lakes are watered by waterfalls (porous limestone rock). The process of tufa formation, which forms barriers and thus creates lakes, spreads over 300 km2 in a succession of large freshwater areas, gigantic waterfalls, rivers, woods and vast meadows. The tiered lakes appear as an impressive natural backdrop. The national park is divided into two parts, the upper lakes reach 637 m above sea level, the lower lakes, the last of which gives birth to the Korana River, are lower (134 m).
