Location - Mount Igman is located between Ilidža and Mount Bjelašnica. Located in the canton of Sarajevo, it extends 10 km east to west and 7 km from north to south. Its southern slope houses the ski resorts of Malo Polje and Veliko Polje (no permanent resident), distant from 2 km each other. Veliko Polje is located 4.5 km northwest of the Bjelašnica ski resort, 20 km south of Sarajevo airport and 24 km south of Ilidža (10 km from birds).Description - This massif is considered the coldest place in Bosnia (this is where the record temperature of -43 ° C has been recorded), the Igman massif is the closest to the capital. It consists of a large plateau of 15 km long over 7 km wide, the north slope of which houses the sources of the Bosna River (Vrelo Bosne). It is dominated by Crni vrh ("black summit") at 1510 m altitude and Mount Igman itself at 1502 m from which the Adriatic Sea can be seen. The two mini-ski resorts of Malo Polje and Veliko Polje are part of the Bjelašnica Olympic Complex created in 1984. There are easy trails for beginners (in Veliko and Malo Polje), long cross-country ski runs (in Veliko polje), some hotels and the impressive ruins of ski jumps (in Malo polje).HistoryJO of 1984 - It's on the site of Igman-Veliko Polje's cross-country skiing competitions (15 km, 30 km, 50 km, 4 x 10 km relays) and female (5 km, 10 km, 20 km, 4 x 5 km relay), and the male biathlon (there was no female category) with tests alternating and cross-country skiing for 10 km, 20 km and 4 x 7.5 km per team. The Malo ski jumping site allowed the jump tests (also reserved for men) on 70 m and 90 m. Finally, the Nordic combined events (always without women) were held on the two sites of Mount Igman with the ski jump (70 m) in Malo Polje and the cross-country skiing part (15 km) in Veliko polje. Not surprisingly, it was the Scandinavians who took the place in almost all the cross-country skiing and jump races.War of 1992-95 - For four years, a large part of the refueling destined for the besieged city was spent by the "Mount Igman Trail": while the roads were in the hands of the Bosno-Serb troops, the Bosnian army used dangerous roads to transport its trucks to the tunnel passing under the airport. The mass was also the scene of massacres perpetrated by the Serbian camp. In Malo Polje, the small monument of the medals podium was used for executions of prisoners. In August 1993, the United Nations was called «demilitarized zone» by the United Nations, and was occupied for two years by a battalion of French blue helmets. In July 1995, he passed the relay to the 4,000 men of the United Nations Rapid Reaction Force. Composed of half of French soldiers (2 nd Foreign Infantry Regiment and 40 th Regiment of Artillery), this brigade directly committed the fight on August 30, 1995 against the army of the Serbian Republic of Bosnia encircling the city. Its consequences were the withdrawal of all heavy weapons from the assignees and the commencement of negotiations on November 1 at Dayton in the United States. These will culminate in the end of the war on December 14, 1995 and the total lifting of Sarajevo headquarters on February 29, 1996.Stigma of War - The intense military activity of the years 1992-1995 is still reflected in the presence of mines. Mine action is still underway, including along roads and tourist areas. The most dangerous part is that located above the Bosna sources. It is therefore strongly emphasized: on Mount Igman as a whole, there is no need to take any unnecessary risks and not to go out under any pretext of the marked areas. The jump springboards themselves should be destroyed and reconstructed to host the ski jumping events of the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2019. The Malo Polje podium has been restored: the impact of bullets disappeared and the wall painted. But abandoned carcases of hotels still exist. There are also many small cemeteries and monuments along the stations and roads, such as the one dedicated to 9 French blue helmets killed in an accident on a snowy trail near Krupac on March 14, 1995 (the largest French casualties during the war).
