This suburb of Valletta developed very quickly, as its residential areas attracted many expatriates for whom Sliema and Saint Julian's were too expensive for accommodation. It owes its name to the Italian military engineer Paolo Floriani, who fortified it in the 17th century as an outer line of defense for Valletta. Devastated by bombing during the Second World War, the district was completely rebuilt and today has a population of around 2,500. The first major religious festival of the year, dedicated to Publius, Malta's first Roman bishop, takes place here, mobilizing the whole district for the occasion.
