Marsaxlokk - pronounced "Marsa-shlok" - is a particularly picturesque Maltese fishing village. Here, you'll see many luzzu, brightly painted fishing boats adorned with a carved eye, a symbol of protection for fishermen. Its fishermen, its renowned fish restaurants and its famous Sunday fish market: this is what Maltese and travelers alike appreciate. Although the spirit of the village has changed somewhat with the influx of tourists, it regains its old-fashioned charm once the market is over. Note that the vineyards between Marsaxlokk and Tarxien are the largest on the island, and are planted mainly with imported Chardonnay.
