The name Sliema has a direct connection with fishing because the word sliem in Maltese is a greeting addressed to the Virgin in the prayers of the sailors. You will note its Italian-style architecture, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the beautiful buildings built by wealthy merchants and aristocrats. For the Maltese, it is above all a waterfront with a long and pleasant promenade, the only real one in the country. And on summer evenings, all the local population gather there to walk until midnight when the gentle wind rises. We walk with family and friends. All age groups meet to talk, to sit on the benches, to nibble on specialities. This long "embankment" is a common point between Sliema and Les Sables-d'Olonne, the French town with which it is twinned. In this chic, maritime district, you will find beautiful shops, banks, many restaurants and good hotels.
