It is the oldest of the Three Cities and the most interesting to visit. Birgu, which means "the suburb", was renamed Citta Vittoriosa after the victory of 1565. Because of its important position in the great port, it served as a base for the Order of St. John and was de facto the capital of Malta from 1530 to 1571. Its rather austere Renaissance style buildings bear witness to the military and religious rigour of their life in this century. At the entrance to Fort St. Angelo there is a marina with shops and tourist facilities. Its streets are those of a Neapolitan village, with linen hanging from the windows and a lively local life.
