Built to plan in 1551 by Claude de la Sengle, a native of Evreux, it is one of the Three Cities on the east shore of the Grand Harbour. It took on the appearance of a fortified town on the peninsula, on the other side of the creek, and what was then called l'Isla became Senglea, named after its founder, La Sengle. Fort Saint-Michel was built at the end of Senglea to protect against possible attacks. Senglea is also known as Città Invicta for its resistance against the Ottoman invasion during the great siege of 1565. Like Cospicua, it was badly affected during the Second World War because of its proximity to the docks. About 75% of the buildings were destroyed. Today, the town of about 2,700 inhabitants is one of the most densely populated on the island due to its very small size. Reaching it by boat avoids the traffic jams by bus and offers a superb view of the bay.
