In the past, many of its inhabitants were stonemasons or fishermen based in the port of Wied iz-Zurrieq, a little further south. But today, with its 11,000 inhabitants, Zurrieq has become the most important village in the south. Before the surrounding villages became independent parishes, it was the religious and administrative centre of this part of the island. You will find more shops and bars here, but the restaurants are conspicuous by their absence. Of Arabic origin, its name would derive from zoroq meaning blue. Its surroundings and the neighbouring villages are the best lands on the island for the exploitation of limestone
