In the past, many of its inhabitants were stonemasons or fishermen based in the port of Wied iz-Zurrieq, a little further south. But today, with its 11,000 inhabitants, Zurrieq has become the most important village in the south. Before the surrounding villages became independent parishes, it was the religious and administrative centre of this part of the island.
