The name Attard would be a distortion of the name of a Semitic deity: Astarte (or Ashtoreth). Whether you reach it from Valletta, via Birkirkara, or from Zebbug, via the south, you will feel in both cases a slight change of scenery. More of a country village, not yet totally a suburb, Attard is a small, medium-sized town that enjoys a certain amount of life, especially along the road to Valletta. Reaching its central square, calm and pleasant, you can visit Sainte-Marie, a 17th century church built in a fairly pure Renaissance style by Tomasso Dingli, and appreciate its fountains and pretty houses
