Tarare is the southern gateway to the green Beaujolais. A working-class town, it has lost none of the atmosphere that characterized it so well in the mid-1970s, when the city was elevated to the rank of world curtain capital. It was in the 18th century that Georges Antoine Simonet succeeded in making a fine, light cotton fabric that would make the town's fortune: muslin. Since 1955, this fabric is celebrated every 5 years by the people of Tarar, who are ever more proud of this identity. The southern gateway to the Beaujolais region, Tarare opens up on one side to the Beaujolais villages and on the other to a beautiful forest area.
