The history of the village of Saint-Pierre-la-Palud is intertwined with that of the mine, which was exploited in ancient times by the Gauls and the Romans to extract lead and copper. In the Middle Ages, only the copper seams continued to be exploited. In the 19th century, the discovery of the pyrite roasting process made it possible to extract the sulphur from the ore. Sulphur was used to produce sulphuric acid, which allowed the chemical industry to develop in Saint-Fons. The mine ceased to be exploited in 1972, giving way to a Mine Museum which also houses the most important collection of minerals in the region
