The name of the commune refers to the copper and iron pyrite mining which ceased in 1972. Its history is linked to that of Sain Bel, which was the headquarters of the Compagnie des Mines de Sain Bel, and to that of the Savigny Abbey of which it was the property. The village of Sourcieux-les-Mines is grouped around its 15th century Gothic church. Some mine shafts are still visible in the hamlet of Le Sarrazin, witnesses of an intense activity that has punctuated local life for centuries (the Romans are said to have exploited copper pyrite at the beginning of our era).
