At the crossroads of the roads linking Annecy and Lovagny to Rumilly, Hauteville-sur-Fier has long been a strategic position for the Counts of Geneva. Overlooking the Fier, its historic role was to "guard" the road to Geneva and they had two castles built there: the Château de Hauteville - of which only ruins remain - situated on a hillock near the hamlet of Verney, and the Château Collonges, at the foot of the same hillock. With the river Fier below, the commune also saw the installation of numerous mills.
