Belley benefits from a crossroads position between Lyon and Geneva. A Gallo-Roman city, the town became a bishopric in the 6th century before falling under the control of the Holy Roman Empire. Returned to France by the Treaty of Lyon in 1601, the town became a sub-prefecture under Napoleon. A garrison town in the 19th century, Belley took the industrial turn in the second half of the 20th century. The historical visit of the town has many points of interest including the Gallo-Roman remains and the house where Brillat-Savarin was born. Belley is naturally positioned as the central city of Bas-Bugey by its dynamism and its influence.
