On the human migration routes from the Mediterranean basin to the north, the site of Donzère was attractive from the very beginning. The Romans settled there to defend the passage. In the Middle Ages, a defensive castle was built, the remains of which still dominate the town. The Renaissance left beautiful traces of which these rehabilitated buildings which today give all its character to the heart of the city. In the 19th century, a major shift took place with industrialization and the construction of the Robinet suspension bridge, which has provided passage since 1847, and the creation of the Aiguebelle chocolate factory, built at the end of the 19th century. The village became a prosperous town.
