7 km south of Montélimar, Châteauneuf-du-Rhône is built on the banks of the river as its name suggests. Occupied since the Bronze Age, the site was of some importance in the Middle Ages. You can stroll through the narrow streets of the old village, from the rue de la poterne to the place des orpailleurs (gold in the Rhône perhaps?), before climbing up to the ramparts, near the statue of Notre-Dame du Rhône, and discovering the unobstructed view over the valley. The Via Rhôna passes through here and every two years a beautiful medieval festival takes place. On the other side of the Rhône, you will find Viviers, in the Ardèche, with its rich heritage.
