Capital of the Enclave of the Popes of the Haut Vaucluse. It is said that its name was born in the 9th century when a certain Valère (Valéracium) built his estate on the banks of the river. The city was also called Valérias, Valrias (Vaurias in Provençal), Vaulréas or Vauréas. Its current name will arrive only in the 19th century. The city experienced a real boom with the popes who wanted to extend their power and bought towns and villages until they formed this enclave. In the 19th century, it began to specialize in industry, with cardboard and pottery. Of its two flamboyant eras remain, among others, some very beautiful mansions.
