Before the French Revolution, Obermodern was attached to the county of Hanau Lichtenberg. Since the Middle Ages, it has been a rich agricultural village. Its history, whose first vestiges date back to 773, is closely linked to the river Moder and to the fief of the lords of Hanau Lichtenberg from 1273. The three mills anchored along the Moder River punctuate the history of the village. Owned by the lordship, they were given in hereditary right to emphyteutic tenants in exchange for rent. The village has several half-timbered houses still visible, the work of the renowned carpenters Schini, whose descendants still live here.
