Raised to the rank of city in the 13th century, Bouxwiller was the capital of the Hanau-Lichtenberg and then experienced another period of glory under the Hesse-Darmstadt. You should follow the historical discovery tour, distributed in the museums and at the tourist office, and stroll through the little town to admire the charming half-timbered houses with their gracefully sculpted oriels, the delightful grain market square, the remains of the princely buildings (castle, terraced gardens, chancellery, etc.) and the buildings that bear witness to the economic renaissance of the town in the 19th century thanks to the lignite mines that were useful to the dye industry.
