The two churches facing each other in the center of the village are the origin of the toponym "Kirihuilare" from Kirrwiller, meaning "church village". Kirrwiller lies close to the Roman road from Brumath to Bouxwiller. The place known as "im Römer" and the Roman coins found in the old village well are reminders of this route. Around 650, in response to the growing attraction of the Christian faith, the free peasants of Kirrwiller and the surrounding villages built their first church, most likely half-timbered, bringing together villagers from seven communes! So Kirrwiller has long been the town of churches!
