The history of this region is linked to that of the lords of Hanau who lived in Bouxwiller, the capital of their county. The de Lichtenberg family, who sat in the castle of the same name, also marked the past of the Hanau region. The common lineage of these two families extended its influence to control several hundred communes, before dying out in 1736. Previously, the region had been heavily affected by the peasants' war. The whole country of Hanau has thus experienced a common past. Nevertheless, its landscapes are quite heterogeneous with mountainous, wooded or agricultural parts. The habitat is also quite varied. These contrasts contribute greatly to the wealth of this country.
