For a time, it was oil that made this village famous, as part of the "Cibéliades" group of towns and villages with thermal springs. Known since the 15th century, a bituminous spring supplied farmers with "mechanical grease". In the 18th century, research was carried out into this material, which turned out to be petroleum. Mining began immediately, culminating in a production of 70,000 tonnes/year. Around Merkwiller, the race for black gold began in the 13th century and lasted until 1970. A few outrigger pumps and sand heaps can still be seen here and there. Merkwiller is also famous for its hot springs.
