The magnificent Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul abbey of Wissembourg still preserves the bell tower of the church built in the 11th century. In the 15th century, the city experienced an era of terror under the tyranny of John of Dratt, who became part of the legend of St. Nicholas as Hans Trapp, a wild, bearded and frightening man who punished disobedient children. In the 18th century, the exiled king of Poland, Stanislas Leszczynski, was welcomed here with his family. With his daughter Marie, future wife of the French king Louis XV, they spent six years in Wissembourg. The city has a rich historical center with superb old half-timbered or Renaissance houses.
