In the 13th century, the knight Albert de Haguenau withdrew from the world to the forest, following in the footsteps of Guillaume de Malleville, the contemplative hermit who founded an order that has now disappeared. From Graefenthal in the Saarland, Guillemite monks founded the sanctuary, which grew over the centuries. In the 18th century, Marienthal was just a hamlet of 4 houses. During this period, Stanislas Leszczynski made several family pilgrimages to Marienthal. Most of the precious gifts of his daughter, the pious Marie Leszczynska, wife of King Louis XV, disappeared during the French Revolution. In the 19th century, the sanctuary once again became an important place of pilgrimage.
