Born from the foundation of a smallholding in the 12th century by the bishops of Strasbourg, the town evolved from the 16th century when the Dukes of Deux-Ponts, residing at the Castle of Bischwiller, welcomed a large Huguenot population which transformed it into a renowned textile center until the 21st century. Its architectural variety testifies to its history: monuments such as the Laub, the former common house, now a museum of local history, and the princely pharmacy, stand alongside the modernity of the new districts. Duke Christian II installed the headquarters of the minstrels of Alsace in Bischwiller and the Festival of the Fifers commemorates this event every two years in summer.
