Herrlisheim is located in the historical and cultural region of Alsace, 18 kilometers northeast of Strasbourg and southeast of Haguenau. The name Herrlisheim is first mentioned in a deed of gift signed in 743 in favor of the convent of Wissembourg. At that time, the village was known as Hariolfesvilla (Hariold's farm). The landgraves of Lower Alsace, the Counts of Œtingen, administered the town in 1251. In 1332, the town passed to the Lichtenbergs, and then to other lords. The village suffered extensive destruction during the Liberation in February 1945.
