While the city of Durlach, now a simple district of Karlsruhe, had been inhabited for several centuries, Karlsruhe was "born" in a way as soon as the foundation stone of the new margrave's residence was laid on 17 June 1715. His castle was to be inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The city then developed around the castle, in the form of a fan, whose residence was of course the centre: Karlsruhe is referred to as the "fan city". Very damaged during the war, the city, as it was rebuilt, contrasts sharply with such romantic places as Heidelberg.
