La Plaine-sur-Mer is located in the Retz region, on the tip of a peninsula known as Pointe Saint-Gildas. Phoenician navigators named the place Rass, meaning "Cape " or "Chief "; it became Rais, then Retz. The ruins of the Moulin de Tillac, the Moulin de la Guerche and the Château de la Noë are reminders that the land belonged to the powerful families of the Dukes of Retz. Remains of an early Christian church and salt furnaces at La Govogne are on display at the Musée du Pays de Retz. At Le Cormier, admire the first seaside villas, built in the early 20th century. The beaches and rocky coves are a fisherman's paradise.
