The town of Les Épesses is famous for the Puy du Fou theme park, France's2nd largest amusement park. But the town's history is not to be overlooked. Let's take a closer look. In 1050, Benedictine monks from Vézelay established a priory in Les Épesses. They took part in the clearing of this thickly forested territory. By 1103, the church was probably the priory chapel. Pope Pascal II recognized it as belonging to the Abbey of Vézelay. Towards the end of the 15th century, it was rebuilt by the lords of Puy du Fou, and enlarged in the 17th century. In the early Middle Ages, the lords lived in their first château near Bourg-Bérard, a village that no longer exists. In the early 15th century, they rebuilt a new château, enlarged and embellished during the Renaissance. Partially destroyed during the French Revolution, since 1978 it has been the setting for an internationally-renowned cinematic show. Boosted by this initiative, in recent years the commune has been reviving the industrial activity it began some fifty years ago, based around small and medium-sized businesses. In short, while Les Épesses is best known for its theme park, there's plenty more to see! The village's historical heritage is not to be outdone: the Puy du Fou château, Notre-Dame church and Saint-Jean chapel. The latter is listed by the Beaux-Arts, as is the church altarpiece, not to mention the Chapelle de la Colonne...
