The citadel of Pujols, due to its exceptional situation, has favoured human settlement since the Gallic period, which resulted in the control of a vast portion of the Lot valley. A powerful fortress was built there in the 5th and 6th centuries to fight against invasions. Until the 13th century Pujols is considered to be one of the most important strongholds of the Agenais. It will escape the crusade known as the Albigensian Crusade. The citadel will be razed after the peace treaty of Meaux in 1229. The inhabitants will find refuge in the Lot valley where in 1251 they will build a bastide " vila nova de Poujols " which became Villeneuve sur Lot. A new fortress will be built in Pujols at the end of the 13th century. It will be sold stone by stone around 1830 to a contractor in order to transform the old abbey of Eysses into a prison. Pujols was classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France".
