After Metz, this small Moselle town boasts the most buildings protected as Historic Monuments: the Portes de France et d'Allemagne, the Lobau barracks and the Château d'Einhartshausen. Phalsbourg is also the birthplace of Emile Erckmann, a successful 19th-century writer. He shared his work with his faithful Vosges-born friend Chatrian, who corrected and published his manuscripts.
