Valdonnez is a small, fertile depression between the Causse de Mende and the western flank of Mont Lozère. The Romans scouted the area very early on, identifying it as rich in agricultural land on the surface, and ore in the subsoil. The ruins of numerous castles (Montalioux, Chapieu...), churches and chapels, such as Saint-Genès above Lanuéjols and the chapel of Saint-Alban on the Balduc hillock, testify to the strategic and spiritual importance of Valdonnez in the Middle Ages. To the west, behind the Lion de Balsiège, a rock that watches over the descent to Mende, the fortified Choizal farm is well worth a visit.
