Between Chanac and Mende, Barjac is a small village at the foot of the causse de Changefège. It had its heyday in the Middle Ages as the seat of one of the eight baronies that made up Gévaudan, that of Cénaret. The Romanesque church remains from this era, with its squat, square bell tower topped by a characteristically shaped spire. The commune is also home to the cliffs site (straddling Balsièges, Cultures and Esclanèdes): a combination of streams and rocks in which bats have found refuge. The little creatures are particularly fond of the landscape, which alternates between woods, orchards, pastures and hedgerows.
