The first fortified construction of the bourgado was realized by the Roman legions on the return of battles in Gaul in 51 BC. The village you can see today is built around its castle and tower, which some say Roman or Sarrasine. During the wars of religion, the village was predominantly Catholic, unlike the rest of the Cevennes. The present church of Saint-Roman-de-Codières only has a novel, because it was built at the beginning of the eighteenth century after the previous building was burned in 1703 by the Camisards.
