On the border between the Gard region and the southern Cévennes, this medieval town, a former refuge for the Camisards, has a strong personality marked by its geographical location and history. Fortified in the Middle Ages, the old town center, with its beautiful 16th and 17th-century houses, squares, fountains and vaulted passageways, bears witness to the rich past of this small silk capital (a reputation it acquired in the 18th century). All that remains of the town's defensive system is the old 17th-century belfry, converted into a clock tower; its campanile supports a bell dating from 1531. Restored, the 12th-century Pont-Vieux (old bridge) allows pedestrians to cross the Hérault River.
