This small rural village at the bottom of the Vaucouleurs valley takes its name from the Old French Ros, meaning "reed". And indeed, reed beds once existed in the damp, marshy bottom of the valley. Mentioned as early as 1036, the village was also known for its leper hospital. In the 14thcentury , the seigneury of Bas-Rosay belonged to the Courtin family and that of Haut-Rosay to the Fredets. They were united by marriage in 1513 and became the Marquisate of Rosay-Villette in 1671. The village boasts a listed 17th-century château, a covered wash-house and a 20th-century church.
