Seneschal Gui de Montlhéry, known as "le Rouge", is the oldest known lord of Rochefort. In the 11th century, he built his fortified castle on this former Gallic rebel stronghold (Rupes Forti), which he abandoned to the de Montfort family. The feudal residence subsequently passed through the hands of other owners, including Charles de Rohan, who sold it to his son-in-law, the Marquis de Bernis. The omnipresent past certainly bears witness to Rochefort's historic illustration, but the simplicity and tranquility of the sandstone-paved streets, blooming with roses and honeysuckle, also contribute greatly to the town's charm today.
