Located in the Drouais natural region, the commune, known as Saulx-et-Richebourg until 1800, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Evidence of this can be seen in the Sablonnière enclosure, an Iron Age farm. From the 12th to the 15th century, Richebourg was a seigneury owned by the lords of the town, themselves vassals of the Counts of Montfort. Two ancient roads, probably Roman, cross the village - including the Avre aqueduct, built in 1893 and supplying Paris with drinking water. To the south is the Sausseron, a small tributary stream of the Vesgre. A little anecdote: Édith Piaf stayed in the village with her impresario, Louis Barrier.
