Jouy-en-Josas owes its fame to the fabric that bears its name: toile de Jouy, invented in the 18th century by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf and produced here for over a century. Internationally renowned thanks to this industry, illustrated today by its museum, the town is also distinguished by its many illustrious inhabitants: Thomas-Charles Dallery, inventor of the propeller; Victor Hugo, who had his romance with Juliette Drouet here; Professor Calmette, discoverer of the BCG vaccine; and, of course, Léon Blum, who died here in 1950. Situated in the heart of the Bièvre valley, the town has retained the calm and charm of a small country village.
