The name of Villiers-le-Bâcle, from the Latin villare (rural domain) evokes a distant past, the village having in the 1980s traces of a Gallo-Roman occupation. But this name also refers to its 14th century lord, owner of the fief, Jehan le Bacle who, crippled, had to walk with a stick, bacle in old French (from Latin baculum). The commune is nevertheless famous for its eponymous 17th century castle and the house-workshop of Foujita, both listed as Historic Monuments. Like many villages, Villiers is home to an ancient church, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, built in the 12th century, rebuilt in the 15th century and reworked in the 17th century
